Guidelines on interviewing…………..

The general guidelines when interviewing a Nanny or Parent help (Mothers’ Help) are the same. The main objective of the interview is for the Nanny to meet the family and vice versa. Parents need an understanding of the candidates experience, qualifications and ability to care for their children. Ask yourself the question, do you think you can you work with this person? Are your personalities compatible? Would you feel confident to leave your child with this person and have peace of mind while at work?
Throughout the interview try to build up a picture of the candidate. This can include both their personal life, education and work history. Ask them about personal areas such as hobbies, interests, family life and how they spend their spare time. This will help bring out the candidates personality.
Discuss the qualification that they hold and feel free to ask about the course, what they felt they achieved, how long the course was for, whether they enjoyed it, and why have they have chosen to work with children? You could follow asking questions about their work history since they qualified, this can include questions about the children they have cared for, discussing any positive and negative areas.
Never be afraid to ask about the candidate’s expectations of the position. Will they encourage the children to have friends round for tea? How much guidance will the candidate require from the parents? Will they use the house phone to make person calls? Will they expect meals from you? Will they work the occasional weekend? Will they babysit?
At the same time explain your expectations; you need to ensure the nanny understands what is expected while in your employment. Outline the duties required, the nanny’s responsibilities, rules on discipline, any housework required, childcare duties, hours of work, safety in driving the children to activities or school, cooking of meals, rules on having friends to tea/lunch, use of the phone etc.

Discuss the salary expectations, firstly of the nanny followed by yourselves.
We also recommend a few case scenarios within your household and ask the nanny how they would manage it. Examples of this include a normal morning in your household, an emergency situation, planning a children’s birthday party, cooking a meal or how would the nanny plan the child’s day?
